Intended audience: recipient coordinator transplant program admin

If a recipient’s waitlisted heart journey is placed on medical hold, the journey (and all clustered journeys) are automatically placed on heart suspension for the duration of the medical hold.

A journey on heart suspension does not accrue wait time and is not included in organ allocations.

Heart suspension triggers

When a medical hold is placed on:

Heart suspension is placed on:

Heart journey

Heart journey

Heart journey that is part of a cluster

All journeys in the cluster

Any clustered organ journey, where that cluster includes a heart

All journeys in the cluster

Lifting a heart suspension

To lift a heart suspension, remove the underlying medical hold from the heart journey.

If the heart journey belongs to a cluster, remove the medical hold from each journey in the cluster.

Extending a medical hold will not lift a heart suspension.

A waitlisted transplant journey may have multiple holds and suspensions applied to it at the same time. Lifting a heart suspension does not have any effect on other holds or suspensions.

Determining whether a transplant journey has a heart suspension

The system indicates which journeys are on heart suspension in a variety of ways.

Heart suspension notifications

When a heart suspension is applied, the system sends a notification to the recipient’s transplant program.

Identifying heart suspensions in a recipient profile summary

  1. Go to the recipient’s profile.

  2. The summary section at the top of the profile page presents an overview of all transplant journeys along with their status.

Example - Heart suspension shown in journey status from recipient status bar

Identifying heart suspensions in the waitlist history table

  1. Go to the recipient’s profile, then select Organ > Waitlist on the sidebar for the organ transplant journey you want to check for a heart suspension.

    • A table at the top of this section presents historical medical statuses and waitlist status changes.

  2. Heart suspensions are indicated by Suspended: Heart in the Type column.

Example - Heart suspension shown in waitlist history table.

    • If the End Date is blank, the journey is still on heart suspension.

    • The Days column indicates how long the journey has been on heart suspension.

Filtering the waitlist summary for heart suspensions

Create a waitlist summary that filters for suspensions. This includes medical suspension, heart suspension, HCC suspension, and NaMELD suspension.

  1. Select Waitlist from the main menu at the top of the page.

  2. Specify search criteria in the fields at the top of the page.

    • Ensure that Include Suspended Recipients is selected.

  3. Select the Generate Report button.

    • The Results Summary indicates the total number of Suspended Recipients that matched the search criteria.
