Medical Holds and Liver Recipients
For a liver or liver cluster recipient with exception points granted for the following conditions: Exception disease(s) selected, HCC in-criteria, exception points eligible clusters, paediatric conditions and baseline or flat score overrides, medical holds can have different implications, depending on the Reason for being on a Medical Hold.
The following reasons for hold are considered as non-medical reasons:
-
Patient preference
-
Patient not available/out of country
-
Patient too well
When a hold with non-medical reason is applied:
Liver or liver cluster recipient with the exception points (as mentioned above) when placed on hold with one of the non-medical reasons, OATS applies a ‘On Hold: Non-Medical’ designation and immediately triggers a Liver Suspension stopping the accrual of wait time and exception points.
If the liver journey is clustered with another organ (except Heart), all the journeys in the cluster are placed on suspension.
Note: The Liver suspension rules do not apply to patients accruing exception points due to paediatric age only
When a hold with non-medical reason is removed:
When a liver or liver cluster recipient on hold with a non-medical reason is removed from hold, OATS will remove the Liver Suspension and end the existing hold with a non-medical reason. As a result, the journey will start accruing wait time and exception points from the date the hold is removed.
When the hold reason changes (a) From non-medical reason to a medical reason, OR (b) When conditions driving the exception points are removed
When the recipient journey is updated and the conditions driving the exception points are removed, OATS will remove the Liver Suspension, and the hold will be updated to ‘On Hold: Medical’ in the waitlist history table with the same reason retained. The journey will start accruing wait time and exception points from the date the hold is updated.
